Ben-u-ron 500mg (Paracetamol)

Ben-u-ron 500mg contains paracetamol (acetaminophen), which is one of the most commonly used over-the-counter pain relievers and fever reducers. Paracetamol works by blocking the production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals in the body that promote inflammation, pain, and fever. Unlike some other painkillers (like ibuprofen), paracetamol is not an anti-inflammatory drug. This means it’s not effective for reducing swelling or inflammation directly.

Common Uses:

  • Pain relief: It is effective for mild to moderate pain such as:
    • Headaches
    • Toothaches
    • Muscular pain
    • Back pain
    • Menstrual cramps
    • Arthritis
    • Post-surgical pain
  • Fever reduction: It is also commonly used to reduce fever, especially in conditions like the flu or colds.

Precautions:

  1. Liver Health: Paracetamol is metabolized by the liver. Taking too much paracetamol can cause severe liver damage. People with liver disease or heavy alcohol drinkers should consult a doctor before using paracetamol.
  2. Overdose Risk: Accidental overdose can occur, especially if multiple medications containing paracetamol are taken at the same time. Symptoms of overdose can include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, confusion. In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention.
  3. Drug Interactions: Paracetamol can interact with certain medications, including:
    • Warfarin: Paracetamol may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin (a blood thinner).
    • Certain anticonvulsants: These may increase the risk of liver damage when combined with paracetamol.
    • Alcohol: Drinking alcohol in excess can increase the risk of liver damage when taking paracetamol.

Dosage and Administration:

For adults:

  • The typical dose is 1 tablet (500mg) every 4 to 6 hours, if necessary.
  • You should not exceed 4,000mg (8 tablets of 500mg) in a 24-hour period.
