The superior effectiveness of interdental brushes over floss, wood or plastic sticks is that the bristles fill  the concavities often found on the surfaces between teeth root surfaces which often are not completely flat/smooth e.g. ledges on crowns, fillings, root surface grooves. The bristles reach the undulating surfaces often found on teeth/roots by their umbrella effect.
